Meissen Cathedral has towered high above Meissen’s Burgberg since the 13th century and dominates the skyline of this popular porcelain town. Together with its predecessor buildings, it looks back on over 1,000 years of church history. The purely gothic cathedral welcomes visitors to church services, concerts, and a diverse range of guided tours. Meissen Cathedral has been Protestant since 1581 and is now the seat of the Bishop of Saxony. A visit to the cathedral and the interactive cathedral museum is an inspiring experience for culture and history enthusiasts!

The workshop led by the so-called Naumburg Master created the high choir, the rood screen, and the octagonal chapel of the cathedral, featuring impressive sculptures, capitals, and statues of donors

... 13th-century stained glass
The central window in the high choir is over 750 years old. Its vibrant colors and masterful design bear witness to the artistic skill of the middle ages.
... Cranach
In addition to the triptych by Lucas Cranach the Elder in St. George’s Chapel and the crucifix altar from his workshop, the cathedral displays other significant works by Cranach and offers insights into the working methods and visual language of the Cranach family.

In his translation of the Bible, Martin Luther used the Meissen chancery German, a style that continues to influence the German language to this day. Our cathedral museum invites you to join us on a journey of discovery!

... Meissen porcelain
The crucifix on the high altar was created in 1760 by the famous sculptor and porcelain designer Johann Joachim Kändler. The two altar candlesticks were also made according to his designs.
